The plan was to meet at the Shell gas station at 10:30, but there was a premiere party last night and we were about 1/2 hour late. That gave us a chance to grab some late breakfast at the Dairy Queen a couple miles before the Vernonia exit. After breakfast, we went to the Shell station and waited for the rest of the group. Kurt showed up first, then Melissa with her two passengers, Liam and Mike. We got to the beach at 12:30. I suited up and started the 1/2 mile downhill hike. The view and surf made the long hike to the beach worth every minute. When I got down to the beach, I finished sealing up my dry gear. For my first session, I took the Drago Rossi Squashtail to work on some hard carving blunts and back blunts. About an hour into my first session, I switched into the WaveSport Project 52 for some big air moves; air blunts and a few pan ams. I spent another hour surfing before coming in for a break. I drank some water and ate a peanut butter Clif bar to build up my energy. I went back out in the Project 52 for another hour before coming back in to help build a fire and talk with the other kayakers. I took a longer break this time for about 30 minutes, before going back out in the Squashtail with Mike and Liam for my last session. The surf was perfect for the Squashtail; long breaks with lots of time in between to get back out into the big stuff. It was great to surf with everyone. The last session with Mike and Liam watching the sun go down while paddling out to catch a few more good surfs made the day.
