Today was my first time on Canyon Creek before the race that will happen in March. It went really well. I only got stuck once in Thrasher, but other than that, it was a very good run. I do need to run Canyon Creek more before the race so that I am as familiar with it as possible. The first couple of rapids are pretty simple. A couple of technical moves are needed, but it’s not too bad. The first real tough rapid is Prelude. It looks a lot like Thrasher, only the hole isn’t so bad. Also, there is something to boof off of. Thrasher is a pretty tough little drop that you have to run far right and try to boof off the water. I just melted down right into the hole and got stuck in the hole that pushed me into the wall. It was pretty simple to get out of it. I just dug my nose under the pour over, pirouetted and flushed out of the hole. The most fun part of the whole creek is probably Big Kahuna . Kahuna is a very clean 20 foot waterfall. An auto boof off the right side or a plug on the left side will get you through it. I haven’t heard of anyone getting stuck but there is a cave to the right side you can get stuck in. You’ll flush out eventually, so just take a big breath before you go under. Only one thing sucks about the run and that’s the mile and a half flat water after the gorge. It’s a good work out, but still not a lot of fun. It was a great run with Alex who I had done Opal Creek with before. Ty and Mike also came along.
