The Upper Wind is pretty low but still runnable, so I headed out in the morning for the take-out. I was early to the take-out so no one was there but a couple of minutes after I arrived, a group got off the river from just doing the run. I talked to them about the run since I had never done it before. They said it was a good level to run today and the lower water level made the river very forgiving even if you screwed up. Once everyone got to the take-out we suited up and headed to the put-in. The put in is right next to a couple of houses, so we tried not to be too loud as we put on. Sam from Tillamook was joining us on the run. The last time I did a river with him was early in the season so it was cool to see him out there. There was probably a 2 or 3 mile warm up (class 2-3) before the gorge. When we got to the gorge, Alex explained the lines of each rapid and down we went. No one had any troubles through most of the rapids, but on the last 2 rapids before the end of the gorge, we had a swimmer and had to rescue him. Even though he went through the last rapid without a boat, he didn’t get banged up at all. I guess what the group before us said was true about the river being very forgiving even if you do screw up and come out of your boat. Sam and I took care of getting the boat to the side of the river and emptying it out. One of the other kayakers got the swimmer to the side. He more or less got there himself, not really needing any help. The rest of the run was just class 2-3 rapids until the take-out. It was pretty smooth the rest of the trip.
